A comforting and nostalgic French Onion Beef Casserole featuring caramelized onions, tender ground beef, earthy mushrooms, and melted cheese, perfect for family gatherings.

  • Total Time: 75 minutes
  • Yield: 6 servings

Ingredients

  • 4 large yellow onions
  • 1 lb lean ground beef
  • 8 oz fresh button or cremini mushrooms
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1 tsp fresh thyme
  • 1 tsp fresh rosemary
  • 1 cup Gruyère or mozzarella cheese
  • 1 cup bread crumbs (panko or crushed crackers)

Instructions

  1. Caramelize the onions: Slice onions thinly and cook in a skillet over medium heat with butter and salt until golden brown, about 25-30 minutes.
  2. Cook the beef: Brown the ground beef in another skillet, drain excess fat, and season with salt and pepper.
  3. Sauté the mushrooms: Add sliced mushrooms to the beef and cook for another 5 minutes.
  4. Combine the ingredients: In a large mixing bowl, mix caramelized onions, beef, mushrooms, beef broth, thyme, and rosemary.
  5. Layer in the dish: Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C), pour mixture into a greased casserole dish, sprinkle cheese on top, and add breadcrumbs.
  6. Bake: Cover with foil and bake for 30 minutes, then remove foil and bake for another 10-15 minutes until cheese is bubbling.
  7. Serve and enjoy: Let cool for a few minutes before serving with a fresh salad or roasted veggies.

Notes

For a lighter option, substitute ground turkey or lentils. Use shiitake or portobello mushrooms for added depth.
