Ingredients
- 1 cup unsalted butter (divided)
- 1 cup light brown sugar
- 3-4 Granny Smith apples (sliced)
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- 2 large eggs
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1/2 cup buttermilk or milk
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
- Melt 1/2 cup of unsalted butter in a 10-inch cast iron skillet over medium heat. Sprinkle 1 cup of brown sugar evenly across the melted butter and cook until slightly thick, about 3 minutes.
- Remove the skillet from heat and layer the sliced apples over the caramel, arranging them as desired.
- In a separate bowl, cream together another 1/2 cup of softened butter and 1 cup of granulated sugar until light and fluffy.
- Add 2 eggs, one at a time, ensuring each is well incorporated. Mix in 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract.
- In another bowl, whisk together 1 cup of all-purpose flour, 1 teaspoon of baking powder, 1/2 teaspoon of baking soda, and 1 teaspoon of cinnamon.
- Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture, alternating with 1/2 cup of buttermilk, stirring until just combined.
- Pour the batter over the apples and spread evenly with a spatula.
- Bake for about 30-35 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
- Allow the cake to cool in the skillet for 10 minutes before inverting it onto a serving platter. Serve warm and enjoy!
