  • Total Time: 50 minutes
  • Yield: 8 servings

Ingredients

  • 1 cup unsalted butter (divided)
  • 1 cup light brown sugar
  • 3-4 Granny Smith apples (sliced)
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup buttermilk or milk

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. Melt 1/2 cup of unsalted butter in a 10-inch cast iron skillet over medium heat. Sprinkle 1 cup of brown sugar evenly across the melted butter and cook until slightly thick, about 3 minutes.
  3. Remove the skillet from heat and layer the sliced apples over the caramel, arranging them as desired.
  4. In a separate bowl, cream together another 1/2 cup of softened butter and 1 cup of granulated sugar until light and fluffy.
  5. Add 2 eggs, one at a time, ensuring each is well incorporated. Mix in 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract.
  6. In another bowl, whisk together 1 cup of all-purpose flour, 1 teaspoon of baking powder, 1/2 teaspoon of baking soda, and 1 teaspoon of cinnamon.
  7. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture, alternating with 1/2 cup of buttermilk, stirring until just combined.
  8. Pour the batter over the apples and spread evenly with a spatula.
  9. Bake for about 30-35 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
  10. Allow the cake to cool in the skillet for 10 minutes before inverting it onto a serving platter. Serve warm and enjoy!

Notes

Serve warm with whipped cream or ice cream for an extra treat.
