Ingredients
- 4 cups bread flour
- 1 1/2 cups warm water
- 1 packet instant or active dry yeast
- 1 tablespoon brown sugar
- 2/3 cup baking soda
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 cup melted butter
- Coarse sea salt for sprinkling
Instructions
- In a large mixing bowl, combine warm water, yeast, and brown sugar. Let it sit for 5-10 minutes until frothy.
- Add salt and flour gradually, mixing until a stiff dough forms. Knead for 5-7 minutes until smooth and elastic.
- Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a damp cloth, and let it rise for about 1 hour or until doubled in size.
- Preheat the oven to 450°F (230°C) and prepare baking sheets with parchment paper.
- Punch down the dough, divide it into 8-10 pieces, and roll each piece into a 24-inch rope, twisting them into pretzel shapes.
- Bring 10 cups of water to a boil, add baking soda, and dip each pretzel for 30 seconds. Remove with a slotted spoon and place on baking sheets.
- Brush with melted butter and sprinkle with coarse salt. Bake for 12-15 minutes or until golden brown.
- Let cool slightly before serving. Enjoy warm with your favorite dipping sauces!
Notes
Experiment with spices like garlic powder for added flavor. These pretzels can also be frozen for later enjoyment.
