  • Total Time: 45
  • Yield: 8 servings

Ingredients

  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 packet active dry yeast
  • 1 ½ cups warm water
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 1 tablespoon salt
  • ⅓ cup baking soda
  • Coarse sea salt for topping

Instructions

  1. Activate the yeast: Combine warm water, sugar, and yeast in a bowl; let sit for 5 minutes until frothy.
  2. Make the dough: Mix flour and salt in a large bowl. Add the yeast mixture and combine to form a dough; knead for 5 minutes on a floured surface.
  3. Let it rise: Place dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise in a warm spot for about an hour or until doubled in size.
  4. Shape the pretzels: Punch down the dough, separate into sections, roll each into a rope, and twist into a pretzel shape.
  5. Prepare the baking soda bath: Boil a large pot of water, dissolve baking soda; drop each pretzel into the bath for 30 seconds, then place on parchment-lined baking sheets.
  6. Bake: Preheat oven to 425°F (220°C). After baking, sprinkle with coarse sea salt and bake for 12-15 minutes until golden brown.

Notes

For a healthier option, use whole wheat flour or honey instead of sugar. Enjoy with mustard or cheese dip.
