Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup cocoa powder
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 oz red food coloring
  • Optional: cream cheese frosting for topping

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and prepare an 8×8-inch baking dish by greasing it lightly with butter or lining it with parchment paper.
  2. Melt the butter in a medium saucepan over low heat. Allow it to cool slightly.
  3. Combine the melted butter and granulated sugar in a mixing bowl until smooth. Add eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition. Stir in the vanilla extract and red food coloring.
  4. Sift together the flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, and salt in another bowl.
  5. Mix the dry ingredients with the wet mixture, stirring just until no dry flour is visible.
  6. Pour the batter into the prepared baking dish and tap gently on the counter to release air bubbles.
  7. Bake for about 20-25 minutes or until a toothpick comes out with a few moist crumbs.
  8. Cool in the pan for at least 10 minutes before transferring to a wire rack.
