Ingredients
- 1 ½ cups all-purpose flour
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- ½ cup brown sugar
- ¾ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- a pinch of salt
- 2 large eggs
- ½ cup unsalted butter
- 1 ½ cups chopped fresh apples (Granny Smith or Honeycrisp recommended)
- Nuts (optional, chopped walnuts or pecans)
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9×13 inch baking pan or line it with parchment paper.
- Mix dry ingredients: In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, granulated sugar, brown sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, and salt.
- Combine wet ingredients: In a separate bowl, melt butter. Add eggs, mixing until combined, then stir in chopped apples and nuts if desired.
- Combine the dry and wet mixtures, stirring until just combined.
- Pour the batter into the prepared pan and spread it evenly.
- Bake for about 25-30 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out with a few moist crumbs.
- Cool in the pan before slicing into squares.
Notes
For best results, use firm and fresh apples. Optional toppings include whipped cream or caramel sauce.
