Ingredients

  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 ½ cups all-purpose flour
  • 4 large eggs
  • 1 cup granulated sugar (for custard)
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 1/2 cup whole milk
  • Zest and juice of 1 large orange (about 1/4 cup juice)
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • A pinch of ground ginger

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C) and line a 9×9-inch baking dish with parchment paper.
  2. Cream together the butter and 1/2 cup of sugar until light and fluffy, about 3-4 minutes.
  3. Gradually mix in the flour until combined; do not overmix.
  4. Press the mixture evenly into the prepared baking dish and bake for 15-20 minutes until golden brown.
  5. While the crust is baking, whisk together the eggs, 1 cup of sugar, and vanilla extract until combined.
  6. Gradually whisk in the cream, milk, orange zest, orange juice, cinnamon, nutmeg, and ginger.
  7. Pour the custard mixture over the hot crust and bake for 25-30 minutes until just set.
  8. Allow to cool completely before slicing into squares.
  9. Dust with powdered sugar before serving, if desired.
