Ingredients
- 4 cups all-purpose flour (or whole wheat flour for a nuttier flavor)
- 1 packet active dry yeast
- 1 ½ cups warm water (around 110°F)
- 1 tablespoon sugar
- ½ cup melted butter
- 1 tablespoon kosher salt
- ½ cup baking soda (for boiling)
- Coarse salt (for topping)
Instructions
- Warm the water and stir in the sugar and yeast, letting it sit for about 5 minutes until foamy.
- In a bowl, combine flour and salt. Add the yeast mixture and melted butter, mixing until a dough forms, then knead for 5-7 minutes.
- Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover, and allow it to rise for about 1 hour or until it doubles in size.
- Punch down the dough, divide it into pieces, roll into ropes, and cut into 1-inch pieces.
- Boil water with baking soda, then drop in pretzel bites for 30 seconds and transfer to a lined baking sheet.
- Brush with beaten egg, sprinkle with coarse salt, and bake at 425°F for 12-15 minutes until golden.
Notes
For a gluten-free option, use almond flour instead of all-purpose flour. Cool and store leftovers in an airtight container for 2-3 days or freeze for up to three months.
