Ingredients
- 4 cups all-purpose flour (or whole wheat flour)
- 1 packet (2 1/4 tsp) yeast
- 1 1/2 cups warm water (around 110°F)
- 1 tablespoon sugar
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 2/3 cup baking soda
- 4 tablespoons butter, melted
- Coarse sea salt for sprinkling
Instructions
- In a large mixing bowl, combine warm water and sugar. Sprinkle yeast on top and let it sit for about 5 minutes until frothy.
- In a separate bowl, mix all-purpose flour and salt. Add the yeast mixture to the dry ingredients.
- Stir until a dough forms. Turn it out onto a floured surface and knead for about 5-7 minutes until smooth and elastic.
- Place the kneaded dough in a lightly oiled bowl, cover with a kitchen towel, and let it rise in a warm place for about an hour, or until it has doubled in size.
- Once risen, punch down the dough and divide it into 8 equal pieces. Roll each piece into a long rope and twist into the classic pretzel shape.
- Bring 10 cups of water to a boil and add 2/3 cup of baking soda. Submerge each pretzel in the bath for about 30 seconds, then transfer to a baking sheet.
- Brush each pretzel with melted butter and sprinkle with coarse sea salt.
- Preheat the oven to 450°F and bake for about 12-15 minutes or until golden brown.
- Serve warm with mustard, cheese dips, or enjoy plain.
