Delicious homemade soft pretzels with a warm, buttery exterior and soft, pillowy interior, perfect for family gatherings and cozy evenings.

Ingredients

  • 4 cups all-purpose flour (or whole wheat flour)
  • 1 packet (2 1/4 tsp) yeast
  • 1 1/2 cups warm water (around 110°F)
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2/3 cup baking soda
  • 4 tablespoons butter, melted
  • Coarse sea salt for sprinkling

Instructions

  1. In a large mixing bowl, combine warm water and sugar. Sprinkle yeast on top and let it sit for about 5 minutes until frothy.
  2. In a separate bowl, mix all-purpose flour and salt. Add the yeast mixture to the dry ingredients.
  3. Stir until a dough forms. Turn it out onto a floured surface and knead for about 5-7 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  4. Place the kneaded dough in a lightly oiled bowl, cover with a kitchen towel, and let it rise in a warm place for about an hour, or until it has doubled in size.
  5. Once risen, punch down the dough and divide it into 8 equal pieces. Roll each piece into a long rope and twist into the classic pretzel shape.
  6. Bring 10 cups of water to a boil and add 2/3 cup of baking soda. Submerge each pretzel in the bath for about 30 seconds, then transfer to a baking sheet.
  7. Brush each pretzel with melted butter and sprinkle with coarse sea salt.
  8. Preheat the oven to 450°F and bake for about 12-15 minutes or until golden brown.
  9. Serve warm with mustard, cheese dips, or enjoy plain.

Notes

Experiment with toppings like everything bagel seasoning, garlic salt, or cinnamon sugar for a unique twist.
