Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 packet active dry yeast (2 1/4 tsp)
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1 cup warm water or milk
  • Optional: pinch of nutmeg or 1 tsp vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. In a small bowl, combine warm water or milk with sugar and yeast. Let sit for 5-10 minutes until frothy.
  2. In a mixing bowl, whisk together flour, salt, and nutmeg.
  3. Pour the yeast mixture into the flour and combine until a sticky dough forms.
  4. Cover with a clean towel and let rise in a warm place for about 60 minutes or until doubled in size.
  5. Heat oil in a deep pot over medium heat.
  6. Scoop small balls of dough and drop into the hot oil, frying until golden brown, about 2-3 minutes on each side.
  7. Remove with a slotted spoon and place on paper towels to drain.

Notes

For extra flavor, consider adding herbs or using whole wheat flour to increase fiber content.
